Dementia Beyond Disease: Enhancing Well Being Workshop by Dr Allen Power

14 Mar 2014, 9.30am - 4.00pm

International dementia expert and best-selling author, Dr Allen Power, presents a full day workshop on "Dementia Beyond Disease: Enhancing Well Being".

In this workshop, Dr. Power will explore a new framework for supporting people who live with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. He will review the problems with overuse of psychotropic medications, the limitations of a narrow biomedical model for dementia, the shift to an “experiential” model and discuss how this view creates a different pathway for understanding the needs of people living with dementia.

Dr. Power will explain why our attempts at person-centred care and non-pharmacological interventions often fall short, and offers a different framework that revolves around enhancing seven domains of well-being. He will look at the precepts of transforming the care environment and how this “culture change” process is integral to new approaches to care, wherever people may live.

Dr Power will take an in-depth look at the seven domains of well being, exploring how they are challenged in people living with dementia and how they can be restored. The session will be highly interactive and specific discussion topics will be tailored to the needs of the audience.
