Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander groups

Alzheimer's Australia is committed to ensuring that the needs of people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are met in all aspects of service provision, information, support and education.

Alzheimer's Australia aims to improve equity in access to services and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with dementia and their carers through consultation and an all of life approach to risk reduction and successful ageing.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dementia Advisory Group (NATSIDAG) provides Alzheimer's Australia with ongoing consultation and advice to improve services and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Background

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dementia Advisory Group (NATSIDAG) was established in 2006 as a result of a two-day National Indigenous Dementia Workshop held in Adelaide. Over 30 participants attended the workshop to discuss whether the issue of dementia was a sufficient priority for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to take action and to determine what that action might be. The attendees agreed that dementia needed to be addressed to enhance community Elder’s capacity to age successfully into the future. The report from this workshop, ‘Beginning the Conversation: Addressing Dementia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities’ is available from our website under Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander publications.

The participants of the workshop nominated six key action areas which the NATSIDAG continues to target:

  1. Community Awareness and Prevention,
  2. Care and Support,
  3. Research,
  4. Diagnosis, Referral and Treatment,
  5. Workforce Issues and
  6. Partnerships and Collaborations.
