Past grants and scholarships

Details of the types of awards offered by Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation (AADRF) in past grant programs including 2010 Dementia Grants Program.

AADRF has offered awards in several main categories including research grants (new investigator grants and grants into dementia care), travel grants, postgraduate scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships.
Applications have now closed for the 2010 Dementia Grants Program – the following is for information only:

Research Grants

AADRF Dementia Research Grant

In 2010, the AADRF Dementia Research Grant was a seeding grant for new researchers, valued up to $25,000 (exclusive of GST), to be allocated for research in a dementia-relevant area. Grants were awarded in both biological/non-clinical and clinical/psychosocial research areas. 

Hazel Hawke Research Grant in Dementia Care

In 2010, the Hazel Hawke Research Grant was seeding grant, valued up to $25,000 (exclusive of GST) for research into dementia care. Suitable projects might have included research into carer support, best quality care practices, activities and therapies for people with dementia, or any other aspect of dementia care research.

Hunter Research Grant into the Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease

In 2010, the Hunter Research Grant into the Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease was a seeding grant for new researchers, valued up to $25,000 (exclusive of GST), to be allocated for research in an area relevant to understanding the causes of Alzheimer’s disease. 

Janssen Cilag Research Grant

The Janssen Cilag Research Grant was a one-off seeding grant for new researchers offered in partnership with the Janssen Cilag Pty Ltd. in 2007, valued up to $20,000 (exclusive of GST).

Ann Miller New Investigator Research Grant

The Ann Miller New Investigator Research Grant was a one-off seeding grant especially for new researchers from Victoria offered in 2007. The grant was valued at up to $20,000 (exclusive of GST). 

 

Travel Grants

Rosemary Foundation Travel Grant

In 2010, the Rosemary Foundation Travel Grant, offered in partnership with the Rosemary Foundation, was a grant up to the value of $15,000 (exclusive of GST) to enable an Australian researcher or clinician to travel overseas for a period of approximately one month, and learn new techniques and/or network with well known international research teams at a hospital or university outside Australia. 

Rosemary Foundation Travel Project Grant

The Rosemary Foundation Travel Project Grant, last offered in 2007 in partnership with the Rosemary Foundation, was a grant up to the value of $10,000 (exclusive of GST) to enable an Australian researcher or clinician to research aspects of dementia overseas. This grant was awarded for the purpose of undertaking research that is not fully available in Australia and is relevant to the advancement of understanding dementia or dementia care and management.

Rosemary Foundation Travel Stipend Grant

The Rosemary Foundation Travel Stipend Grant, last offered in 2008 in partnership with the Rosemary Foundation, was a grant up to the value of $5,000 (exclusive of GST) to enable an Australian researcher to attend and present at a conference or similar event. Researchers presented their research related to understanding dementia, dementia care and management or carer support.

Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation Travel Stipend Grant

AADRF last offered a travel stipend grant valued at $5,000 (exclusive of GST) in 2007 to enable an Australian researcher to attend and present at a conference or similar event. Researchers presented their research related to understanding dementia, dementia care and management or carer support. 

 

Postgraduate scholarships

AADRF/CRC Joint and AAR Entirely Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Social Research and Dementia

Two types of scholarships were offered in 2006 and 2007. One type was offered in a partnership between Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation (AADRF) and the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre – Consumers and Social Research (DCRC – CSR), established by the Australian Government as part of its Dementia National Health Priority Initiative. The second scholarship was entirely funded by AADRF. Both scholarships supported a PhD student undertaking research in an area relevant to social research and dementia. The scholarships were valued at $25,000 per annum (tax-free) each and were awarded for three years.

In 2010, AADRF offered two further joint scholarship in conjunction with the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre – Carers & Consumers (DCRC-CC), called the 2010 AAR/DCRC-CC Joint Postgraduate Research Scholarships for Research Focused on Quality in Dementia Care. These scholarships were valued at $30,000 per annum (tax-free) each and awarded for three years. 

Hunter Postgraduate Scholarship

AADRF offered the Hunter Postgraduate Scholarship into the Causes of Alzheimer’s disease between 2005 and 2007. The scholarship supported PhD students undertaking research in an area relevant to understanding the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and was valued at up to $23,000 per annum (tax-free) for three years.

George Hicks Postgraduate Scholarship for Dementia Prevention and Risk Reduction Research

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic, in conjunction with Alzheimer’s Australia Deemntia Research Foundation (AADRF), offered the George Hicks Postgraduate Scholarship for Dementia Prevention and Risk Reduction Research in 2007. The scholarship supports a PhD student who is enrolled in a Victorian University and undertaking research in an area relevant to the prevention and/or risk reduction of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The scholarship was valued at $25,000 per annum (tax free) for three years.

Sylvia and Charles Viertel Postgraduate Research Scholarships in Dementia

In 2007, AADRF offered the Sylvia and Charles Viertel Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Dementia. Two scholarships were awarded, one in biological/non-clinical research and one in clinical/psychosocial research into dementia. The scholarship was valued at $30,000 per annum (tax-free) for three years. 

 

Postdoctoral Fellowships

AADRF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Dementia

AADRF has offered the Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia since 2008. The fellowship supports a PhD graduate undertaking research in an area related to dementia. This fellowship was valued at $90,000 per annum for two years in 2008 and $45,000 per annum (on condition that the applicants’ institution matches this annual sum) for two years since 2009.

Viertel Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia

AADRF offered four Viertel Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia in 2008, two for biological/non-clinical research and two for clinical/psychosocial research in dementia. The fellowship supports PhD graduates undertaking research in an area related to dementia. This fellowship was valued at $45,000 per annum for two years, on condition that the applicants’ institution matched this annual sum.
