Fight Dementia Campaign

The Alzheimer’s Australia Fight Dementia Campaign has come about due to the decision in the 2011/12 Federal Budget to terminate the Dementia Initiative meaning a loss of guaranteed funding for essential dementia programs and support services for people with dementia.

This was a severe disappointment to people with dementia and their families and carers as the dementia epidemic continues to grow.

There are currently 267,000 Australians living with dementia and the number of people with dementia is set to increase by almost 50% over the next 10 years. By 2050 there will be almost one million Australians with dementia.

Action is needed now on dementia.

Alzheimer’s Australia wants the 2012/13 Federal Budget to allocate an extra $500 million over the next 5 years for improved dementia care. These funds will help to:

1.   Promote awareness and understanding of dementia

2.   Achieve timely diagnosis of dementia

3.   Provide quality dementia care in community, residential and acute care settings

4.   Make Australians aware they may be able to reduce their risk of dementia

5.   Invest in dementia research to reduce future numbers of people with dementia

If you would like to support the fight you can sign up as a Dementia Champion, write to your Federal Member of Parliament and Senators for your state and share your story.
