Spirituality and Issues of Care at the end of Life: From Emanuel Levinas to Christopher Hitchens.

Speaker: Dr Tony Schumacher Jones, Senior Behavioural Consultant and Team Leader, the Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service of the ACT.

Spirituality is a feature of life for all humans whether they identify themselves as people who believe in a deity or deities or profess no faith at all in the existence of a god or gods. Those who work in health care need to be especially mindful of responding appropriately to the variety of beliefs and values espoused by those in their care. In order to do this they must each begin by managing their own beliefs and values and ensuring that these are not imposed on either their colleagues or on those in their care. In this presentation I want to explore the idea of spirituality, some important issues concerning the end of life and spirituality, and how the health care workers can manage their own beliefs, ideals, and values whilst respecting those of their clients, especially when these sets of values are at odds with each other.
